Reading: Luke 2:22-38

In this passage we see Joseph and Mary doing something that all Jewish fathers were supposed to do. Presenting their newborn child at the Temple to be circumcised. Although a child is an event that marks the life of a family forever, surely hundreds of families attended Jerusalem every day for this ceremony. Moreover, Joseph and Mary were people of humble condition who would bring a simple offering.
And once again two things stand out.
On the one hand the detail of each event of the narration and how Luke wants us to see all these things (that surely have been told to him by Mary herself). And how we are told that she kept them in her heart.
And on the other hand, everything that is related to Jesus ceases to be common and ordinary.
When Jesus arrives at the Temple there is someone waiting for him. Simeon. This just and pious man had received a promise. He would not die until he saw the Christ. And what precious praise flows from his lips! May we make it our own!

“Now, O Lord, let Thy servant depart in peace, according to Thy word;
which thou hast prepared in the presence of all peoples;
a light of revelation to the Gentiles, and the glory of thy people Israel.
For mine eyes have seen thy salvation.

That was Simeon’s (and Anna’s) longing. To see the salvation of the Lord!
We too have been able to behold His Salvation!

MEDITATE: Do we remember every day how extraordinary it is that the Son of God has come to us? Does our joy come from His salvation?
