An introduction to the Gospel of Luke

An introduction to the Gospel of Luke

‘Forasmuch as many have taken in hand to set forth in order a declaration of those things which are most surely believed among us, Even as they delivered them unto us, which from the beginning were eyewitnesses, and ministers of the word; It seemed good to me also, having had perfect understanding of all things from the very first, to write unto thee in order, most excellent Theophilus, That thou mightest know the certainty of those things, wherein thou hast been instructed. ‘

Luke 1:1-4

Today we begin to read together the Gospel of Luke, the only book of the NT written by a Gentile (not a Jew). Originally this Gospel, and the book of Acts were joined together. Its author was a disciple and collaborator of Paul, but he had also known and treated the rest of the apostles and disciples (like Peter, Barnabas or Mark)

Who was Theophilus? We have no further details about who he was, but we do know that he was a Gentile who had believed in Jesus Christ. The Gospel of Luke is dedicated to this brother of ours, but it was intended to make Jesus known to all who read it, like us today.

What was Luke’s purpose? This physician had thoroughly investigated (talking to all those who had been eyewitnesses to the life and work of the Lord Jesus) in order to present in an orderly manner what the Church believed, that is, who Jesus was, and what He had come to do. There is a clear emphasis on the truthfulness of what is told here. His Gospel possesses many precise historical data, many details, and the source of these is not a fable but the previously written documents and the testimony of those who had lived all these things, and therefore, were willing even to die, for the Lord’s sake.

TO MEDITATE: How do we communicate the Gospel? Do we emphasize and focus on the One who is the Gospel?
