Citizens of Heaven

Citizens of Heaven

Reading: Luke 6:20-26

And he lifted up his eyes on his disciples, and said, Blessed be ye poor: for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are ye that hunger now: for ye shall be filled. Blessed are ye that weep now: for ye shall laugh. Blessed are ye, when men shall hate you, and when they shall separate you from their company, and shall reproach you, and cast out your name as evil, for the Son of man’s sake. Rejoice ye in that day, and leap for joy: for, behold, your reward is great in heaven: for in the like manner did their fathers unto the prophets. But woe unto you that are rich! for ye have received your consolation. Woe unto you that are full! for ye shall hunger. Woe unto you that laugh now! for ye shall mourn and weep. Woe unto you, when all men shall speak well of you! for so did their fathers to the false prophets.

The Lord makes an awesome statement. Those whom the world looks down upon He calls blessed, fortunate, blest, fortunate, joyful.
They are the poor of this world, the despised, the suffering, the sinners, those who recognize their misery and need. They are citizens of Heaven. Those who are now hungry, those who mourn, those who are hated. Those persecuted and rejected for following Christ. These are the blessed, for they are not from here, they are citizens of an Eternal Kingdom, whose King clothed himself with love to reach them.
Woe to those who trust in their riches, in their goods, in their prestige and power. Those who look at the suffering and despise them, those who mock and laugh at the future. Those who believe that there are no consequences for evil. Great will be their anguish on the day of the Lord.

MEDITATE: Do we have our eyes on the Heavens? Do we face our sufferings with this hope? Do we treasure the Kingdom of God?
