Jesus is the one who was to come

,

Reading: Luke 7:18-23

And the disciples of John shewed him of all these things. And John calling unto him two of his disciples sent them to Jesus, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? When the men were come unto him, they said, John Baptist hath sent us unto thee, saying, Art thou he that should come? or look we for another? And in that same hour he cured many of their infirmities and plagues, and of evil spirits; and unto many that were blind he gave sight. Then Jesus answering said unto them, Go your way, and tell John what things ye have seen and heard; how that the blind see, the lame walk, the lepers are cleansed, the deaf hear, the dead are raised, to the poor the gospel is preached. And blessed is he, whosoever shall not be offended in me.

John has been called to announce that the Kingdom of God is near, and that is the mission he has fulfilled. As God’s prophet (the greatest of all) he knew what he was to announce, but as a human being he did not know all things. And he doubted.
John’s disciples come to Jesus and ask him: Are you the one who is to come, or should we continue to wait?
What Jesus had affirmed about himself, the revelation of his identity as the Son of Man, as the one bringing and embodying the Kingdom of God (see Luke 4:21) is what John needs to know.
Are you the one you claim to be?
Jesus does two things:
1) in that same hour he heals and delivers many, and John’s disciples see this.
2) He sends these disciples of John to tell him that what he heard, they saw.
Jesus is the fulfillment of the promise. Jesus is the Son of God, who became flesh. Jesus is Isaiah 35:4-6 or Isaiah 61 being fulfilled.
John’s question is still relevant. Who is Jesus?
Jesus is. Jesus is God made flesh. Jesus is the remedy for our sin. Jesus is the freedom from our sin. Jesus is the only one who can do what is simply impossible for us. Jesus is.

MEDITATE: May our hearts today (and every day) rest in this (firm and unshakable) truth! Jesus is God’s answer to our wickedness and rejection! Jesus is the only answer!
