Reading: Luke 3:1-20
We read the same passage today as in our previous post. On that occasion, as we read it, we reflected on the particular moment when God’s voice is raised through John and his message. Let us look at some more details:
His mission: John is preparing the way for the Messiah. Jesus comes to transform hearts, not superficialities. John’s message points to the root of the problem because that is what needs to be changed. And the One who is coming is the Only One capable of doing it. To take hearts of stone and transform them with his love and truth.
The Gospel demands sincerity: John’s message points to the heart, not the exterior. It is easy to create an appearance of devotion to God and not even know him. That is why John’s call is to sincerity. Let us not deceive ourselves. We cannot mock the One who knows our hearts.
The Gospel is God’s Judgment: The Gospel is a gift, and through Jesus we are reconciled to God. But he who is already condemned rejects it. The axe is at the root says John. There is no other good news from God. The Gospel is God’s final and perfect covenant with humanity.
MEDITATE: Do we examine ourselves every day, and let the Spirit keep our hearts sensitive to the Gospel?
